Corgi Engine 2D/2.5D Platformer and Side Scrolling Unity Framework Review

Today we are taking a look at Corgi Engine one of the most popular assets on the Unity Asset Store, and currently half price as part of the ongoing Unity Super Sale. The Corgi Engine is a set of tools, assets and code libraries designed to make creating 2D and 2.5D side scrolling and platforming games easier.

From the Unity Store page, Corgi Engine is described as:

The Corgi Engine is the bestselling and most complete platformer solution for Unity.

It’s built around a tight (non physics based controls) character controller that will give your game the best possible experience. It’s very fast and works on desktop, mobile, and everywhere you want. Packed with features and constantly updated (50+ releases over the last 5 years), it’s the best tool to create the 2D + 2.5D platformer or run & gun game you want!

Whether you’re new to Unity, a seasoned developer or a studio, creating your first game or a commercial one, the engine will help unlock your game’s potential.

Essentially Corgi Engine provides you all of the building blocks required to make a typical 2D side scrolling game, including game logic for handling multiple rooms, input, gravity, character controls, AI creation, moving platforms and much more. It also comes loaded with assets, ready to go prefabs and tons of demonstration levels to make earning easier. There is also a decent amount of documentation available here.

There is a great deal more information and a comprehensive feature list available on the Corgi Engine homepage. If platformer style games aren’t what you are trying to create, they also make an asset for creating Top-Down styles of games such as Zelda or Binding of Issac, as well as a toolkit for creating Infinite Runner style games. They also have a bundle containing all of their toolkits available here.
