The free open source AAA style game engine O3DE have just hit a major milestone, the release of O3DE 25.10. This release coming nearly have a year after the O3DE 25.05 release and honestly this release doesn’t bring a ton of sexy new features. Instead it focuses on the critical under the hood features, an area of polish that really held O3DE back in the past. These days getting up and running with O3DE has never been easier and the engine is creeping closer and closer to being production ready.
Key features of the O3DE release include:
- A more efficient build process.
- An improved debugging experience (up to 50% reduction in editor memory usage, faster build times when debugging, and a many fold decrease in iteration time, from minutes to seconds).
- Added compatibility with the C++ 20 standard.
- A more dependable asset processor that detects dependencies and is better optimized for performance.
Obviously there was more than that including over 100 bug fixes and improvements fully documented in the release notes(linked below).

O3DE has come a long way from its initial roots as CryEngine and it’s incredibly troubled Lumberyard iteration. After years of development and polishing O3DE is really approaching a state where I highly recommend you check it out, especially if you are looking for a free and open source alternative to Unreal Engine. Even if you checked out Lumberyard or O3DE in the past and dismissed it, I highly recommend you give it a second look, they really are improving it in all the right ways.
