PixiEditor is a powerful, free and open source, cross platform (Windows, Mac and Linux) all-in-one 2D graphics application. This application is capable of mixing traditional 2D painting, pixel art, animation and vector graphics workflows, all built on top of a graph based procedural system, making it an extremely powerful and flexible tool. Since we first were blown away by PixiEditor back in 2025, plenty of new features have been added. PixiEditor 2.1 was just released adding even more new features including:
Node-Based Brush Engine
There is a completely new procedural node based brush engine enabling you to create just about any brush you can imagine, responsive to other layers, pen data, time and more. Brush settings can be exposed fully to the Pen Tool UI and brushes can even support shaders!
New Painting Systems
The painting engine has also received an upgrade with a more precise paint engine, but also stroke stabilizers including time based and distance based options.
Customizable Toolsets and Brush Tools
Create your own brushes and organize them into your own completely customizable toolsets.
Adjustment Toolset
A new toolset mode (like Pixel Art, Vector, Painting) has been added called Adjustment Toolset, and this contains powerful raster graphics tools including blur, sharpen, smudge and brightness tools.
New Extensions($)
New paid extensions have also been released (fully optional) including the Skybox Designer, Normal Map Generator and Advanced Pixel Art toolset.
Mushy Advisor
Clippy is back, but now he’s a mushroom. It’s an interactive helper and sadly I do not see an option to ban it to the netherworld!
Much, Much More
It’s a very comprehensive update and several other features include improved SVG support, Blackboard, Smart Layers, animation timeline improvements and more.
