Unity 6.4 and Beyond – Unity GDC Update

In advance of the 2026 Game Developer Conference, Unity released a hour+ long video entitled GDC Unity Product Update which outlines what we can expect from the Unity game engine in the near future. Much of what is discussed we have already covered here on GameFromScratch including the standardization on the Universal Render Pipeline. We have however consolidated the Unity video down to a much more manageable 12 minute format for those that want the TL;DR version of what we can expect from Unity, specifically Unity 6.4 through Unity 6.8.

Highlights we cover in the video below include:

  • Updates to the render pipelines
  • The new Global Illumination system SCGI or Surface Caching Global Illumination
  • PSO – Pipeline State Object – Caching and other shader compilation improvements
  • New AI tools in Unity including
    • Scene generation from prompts
    • Profiling tools
    • UI construction with UI Toolkit and AI
    • Annotation system for visual interaction
    • Checkpoint and roleback system
    • MCP – Model Context Protocol support and “bring your own keys” AI
  • CoreCLR timeline
  • Web runtime improvements
  • Webshops and IAP tools
