At the keynote of their annual developer conference Unite, Unity outlined the features of what they are referring to as Unity Next Generation, but I believe can safely be referred to as Unity 7 (as they just rebranded to Unity 6 last year!). Although quite a ways away from being released, Unity 7 is currently being tested by a handful of Unity customers.
Core features of Unity 7 include:
- HDRP and URP merged into Unified Pipeline
- CoreCLR support
- DOTS, or the Data Oriented Technology Stack, being built in (and used by the editor)
- New faster and less blocking content pipeline
- New animation system
- New non-destructive procedural terrain tools
Basically they have taken a number of the modular (and option) technologies developed over the last several years and built them into the core, leading to hopefully a better performing, more usable and less fragmented core going forward.
