Yesterday we reported on an update to the Unity Hub that removed the ability to create non-Unity Cloud projects. While not a blunder even approaching the magnitude of the Unity Runtime Fee it is a PR fail and one that Unity can ill afford right now. Good news is, due to community feedback, Unity have mostly walked the change back:
This post on Unity discussions from Mike Geig:
Ok, so many folks to respond to, so I am going to put this here at the bottom and hope people see it. We will also be making another Discussions post about it (hopefully tomorrow)
BTW, this feels copy / pasted because it is. I have a lot of places to post it!: Thanks so much for the feedback, it really helps us make user-aligned decisions. I’ve been discussing this with leadership internally, and the point we kept coming back to was that we want users to have control over their data, in all forms. As such, we have decided for now to re-add the ability to choose whether a project is auto connected to the cloud in the Unity Hub. The change should be live very soon, you just need to restart the Hub to see it. FYI, I believe the UI will look a little different than before (it will say something like “Create Offline”).
Going forward, we will continue to work with our users to determine the right way to enable controls and tools for the people that want them. So, anyway, I wanted to make sure you saw that your feedback was listened to, and again, I really appreciate you speaking up! If you have other questions, feel free to ping me
The solution they have provided is somewhat ugly however and is hopefully temporary. Now when you create a project, you need to drop down Project name, then scroll all the way down and select Create New Local Project.
Hopefully this is a temporary fix, as this is a classic example of a dark pattern UI design if not. You can learn more about this whole situation in the video below.
